Plastic surgery is the surgical repair of skin defects and deformities the removal of skin tumors and surgical reconstruction. Increasingly however this medical specialty includes other procedures such as fatty-tissue removal wrinkle reduction breast and penile enlargement or reduction and even the permanent application of make-up. Technological advances and changing cultural mores have continually broadened the scope of plastic surgery such that it is now primarily equated with cosmetic or aesthetic surgery.Surgery may well be the oldest branch of medicine but many centuries passed before modern methods including plastic surgery were possible. It was not until precise knowledge of the body was available anesthesia was understood and methods of controlling hemorrhage and post-operative infection were devised that complex surgery could be undertaken. There is evidence to suggest however that surgery could have been an ancient practice. One Indian text dating from the fourth century B.C.E. includes an extended section on surgery though it is unknown whether the procedures described were actually practiced. Direct accounts of a plastic surgery performed in Poona in 1793 do exist and the British physicians who witnessed the procedure described the “Hindu method” as far superior to comparable Western techniques which suggests that plastic surgery had been performed in India for perhaps centuries. Interestingly the procedure was a rhinoplasty involving skin grafts and reconstruction for a man whose nose had been amputated as punishment for adultery. Because this method of punishment was common it may have served as impetus for the development of early plastic surgery. Other records indicate that syphilis which reached epidemic proportions during European colonial expansion may have also facilitated advances in surgical techniques that attempted to repair the diseases grotesque manifestations. The researchers also conducted an online survey of 644 individuals who reported actively considering surgery. Interviewees said they thought they could minimize their risks by researching the procedure and the surgeons who specialize in that area. Two-thirds of the interview participants said the potential risks would not deter them from seeking surgery, while one-third said they would need to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. The research was funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeryAlthough these three types of surgery share some common techniques and approaches, they have somewhat different emphases. Plastic surgery is usually performed to treat birth defects and to remove skin blemishes such as warts, acne scars, or birthmarks. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed to make persons look younger or enhance their appearance in other ways. Reconstructive surgery is used to reattach body parts severed in combat or accidents, to perform skin grafts after severe burns, or to reconstruct parts of persons body that were missing at birth or removed by surgery. Reconstructive surgery is the oldest form of plastic surgery, having developed out of the need to treat wounded soldiers in wartime.

“It is mainly from former clients who have been on overland journeys in the past and now want to repeat the experience with their own children,” he said. “The trend for family long-haul travel is one we have noted.” The next safari departs on 28 July (tel: 01728 861133) CORBIS Whether you stay in a luxury lodge or go for a more authentic wilderness challenge, there are plenty of safaris to suit your style Lodge standards and styles vary enormously. Some are flights of architectural fantasy providing unimaginable luxury for as little as six guests, others are huge hotel-style abominations that disgorge legions of the dreaded zebra-striped minibuses. In recent years, sense has prevailed and there has been a growing requirement from governments for operators to build lodges that blend into their surroundings and make the minimum possible environmental impact. At the same time, rising standards throughout the tourism and hotel industry worldwide have lead to a far greater emphasis on design, comfort and service. South Africa probably leads the field at the luxury end of the small private lodge market although Kenya, Zimbabwe and Botswana could all put forward strong contenders. Around the western side of Kruger National Park are a number of private concessions whose lodges vie with one another for the greatest degree of opulence. Singita Boulders, possibly the ritziest of the lot, boasts air-conditioned suites each with its own swimming pool, spa and gym. Those hedonists and honeymooners (who account for a significant proportion of the safari market) primarily seeking comfort with a backdrop of wildlife will welcome this level of pampering, but traditionalists may find the ambience out of kilter with a wilderness experience. Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Paw-Print Software has launched Adbin, its new tool that integrates with Microsofts Internet Explorer browser to remove advertising from web pages as they are downloaded. Adbin uses an extensible set of rules to identify ads during page downloading. When it finds an image that it suspects is an ad it replaces the it with another one directly from the PCs local drive. ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone. The costs associated with purchasing radio advertising time reflect this emphasis on reaching the commuter audience. The four time slots, or dayparts, offered for advertisers by most radio stations are the morning drive, daytime, afternoon drive, and evening. The two most expensivebut also most effective advertising slotsare the morning and afternoon drive times.

Families; rights, laws, and stability. Ed. by Janice R. Redmund and Kathleen B. Killigan. As reported in the last edition (Adoption Fostering 30:2, pp 76-77, 2006), this came into force on 4 May 2006. The Commencement Order is the Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 (Commencement, Transitional Provisions and Savings) Order 2006, S.S.I. 2006/212 and it has details of savings and transitional provisions. The Act makes changes to various areas of family law, including those listed: * Marriage, including the abolition of marriage by cohabitation with repute. * Divorce, including changes to the grounds for irretrievable breakdown, with the periods reduced from two years to one year for separation with consent and from five years to two years for separation without consent. And there are changes to the rules about financial provision on divorce.

Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are the latest celebrity couple to find out the hard way that divorce often ends in a long, acrimonious and expensive court battle. But many costly annulments could be avoided if alternative and less hostile means of separation were explored first, new research suggests. Sir Paul says his experience of seeking a divorce - which has included mediation - is like “going through hell”. In an interview with Radio Times, published today, the former Beatle, 65, adds: “As Winston Churchill once said, If you are going through hell, keep going! The only solution is to remain dignified. If I dont keep a silence about it, I lose this idea of being dignified.” The NAOs research implies that solicitors are costing the public purse up to 10m a year by putting profits before their clients interests. Under the legal aid system, solicitors can expect to be paid much more in fees if their case is settled in court. In a third of cases examined by the NAO, lawyers had failed even to suggest that a client seeking a divorce or separation should first consider mediation as alternative to court. The Legal Services Commission (LSC), which authorises legal aid payments, spends about 300m a year helping those who qualify for state funding to deal with a family breakdown. THE POPE has urged Roman Catholic lawyers and magistrates to refuse to handle divorce cases. He warned that divorce was “spreading like the plague” and lawyers should decline to use their profession for, “an end that is contrary to justice”. Pope John Paul II has in the past insisted that Catholic doctors not perform abortions or assist women with contraception. But this is the first time he has tried to tell the legal profession what to do. The reaction from politicians and advocates in Italy has been one of dismay at such open interference in civil issues. (This article originally ran in Lawyers Weekly USA, Boston, MA, another Dolan Media publication.) When parents with children divorce, their relationship is rarely over. Until the children are old enough to live on their own, the parents will have to negotiate with one another over an enormous range of child-rearing issues - and for many, the communication and cooperation this requires will not come naturally. Thats why the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers has issued a model parenting plan for family lawyers to use when helping clients establish a set of child-rearing rules and methods for resolving disagreements. The plan - which was distributed in September to 1,600 members - is intended to be a road map for navigating potentially bumpy child- rearing issues. It covers everything from where children will live and who theyll spend holidays with, to what after-school activities they can attend and what their summer schedules will be. The plan also asks parents to agree on their childrens religious upbringing and to confer with each other about non-emergency medical, dental and psychological treatments.

The National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) has issued its March Printing Business Conditions Report, with all indicators signaling that the recession is over for print. The report cautions, however, that the pace of the recovery will be slowed until corporate profits and the ad budgets they support strengthen late in 2002. It also points out that given the way the printing industry is changing, not everyone will share in the recovery–even when it hits full speed. NAPLs Printing Business Conditions Special Update includes information on printing industry sales and profitability, as well as macroeconomic data for the national economy. The update is published six times a year by NAPLs Printing Economic Research Center. The NAPL Printing Business Index (PBI), the associations comprehensive measure of printing industry activity, rose to 53.0 in March, up from 49.6 in February and 39.9 in January, marking the fifth consecutive month the number has risen and the first time since October 2000 that it stands above 50. A PBI reading above 50 signifies that more printers report business is picking up than report business is slowing down. Conversely, an index reading below 50 indicates the opposite position. The PBI is a measure of printing activity that includes critical factors such as current business conditions, expected future business conditions (confidence), work-on-hand, hiring plans and pretax profitability. How much an individual company participates in the upturn ahead will clearly depend on the client mix, and even more on how well the company prepares for the structural change that is redefining our industry, said NAPL vice president and chief economist Andrew Paparozzi. Our markets are changing. So are the kinds of services our clients expect, how we produce and deliver those services and our competition. Thats why, as weve emphasized all along, this wasnt just another recession–and this isnt just another recovery. We are a growth industry, and growth will accelerate considerably over the next 18 months. But this time, a rising tide isnt going to lift all boats. Online technology, an ancillary business opportunity for many magazines, has become a means of survival for others. In the past few months, at least three publications - the mass-market Omni and the lesser-known Shade and Adcom - have opted to check their troubled print versions at the door of the online universe in an attempt to reinvent themselves electronically and financially.Keith Ferrell, editor of the 14-year-old science title, says going further online is a logical step for a magazine thats about the future. We decided somebody was going to have to take the plunge, he says. And since were Omni, we thought wed do it.Of course, as with any major transition, the Omni move isnt quite as simple as a press release might make it sound. Increased postal rates and paper costs probably played a part in the General Media decision, too, along with a shrinking subscriber base and declining ad pages. (Although the New York City-based magazine posted a 15 percent increase in ad pages last year, to 672 from 586, according to figures compiled by Publishers information Bureau, that was still down from Omnis 1992 total of 724 ad pages.) A heads up on how to hold on to and beautify those wonderful tresses The average person loses somewhere between 50 and 125 strands of hair each day as a normal part of “shedding.” This may seem like a lot, but lost hairs (including eyebrows and eyelashes) are replaced very quickly so that we barely notice their departure. Its when you begin to lose more than this number on a regular basis that you may be headed for trouble. If you find youre clogging your drain during one shower, youre probably shedding too much hair. And, if new growth doesnt seem to take place as quickly as it once did, or worse, not at all, you may become one of the 40 million men and 20 million women destined for thinning hair or pattern hair loss. Hair loss is a common problem in men and women. Correct diagnosis of hair disorders is complex and requires evaluation of clinical presentation, history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Hair loss may be categorized as hair shaft abnormalities, permanent alopecia, or nonpermanent alopecia. Nonpermanent alopecia, the most common type, includes androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. The hallmark of this group is the possibility of complete regrowth with adequate treatment. Hair loss, or alopecia, is one of the most distressing disorders for both adults and children because our society places a great emphasis on physical appearance. Women, children, and adolescents with hair loss may be especially troubled by their appearance. The importance of the patients cosmetic concerns should not be underestimated. The etiology of alopecia may be somewhat confusing, as it is associated with a wide variety of causes. Some cases are best managed with reassurance and education, whereas others require medical evaluation and therapy. In this article, the hair cycle and the common causes of hair loss are reviewed. The most common types of hair loss — androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium alopecia areata, and traction alopecia — along with current treatment modalities are reviewed. Poor diet Nutrients are required for hair to grow properly. These include protein, glucose, vitamins and iron, sodium and sulphur. Insufficient iron is a common cause of hair loss. Antibiotics, when taken over a long period, have been shown to cause hair loss, as have some thyroid medications and anti-coagulants. Too much vitamin A or vitamin E can cause hair to fall out.

Sports Chiropractic EDITORS: ROBERT D. MOOTZ, DC, AND KEVIN MCCARTHY, DC PUBLISHER: ASPENPart One of this book is devoted to conditioning and exercise injury prevention with articles on the health benefits of exercise, aerobic conditioning related to injury prevention and rehabilitation, weight training, and chiropractic spinal care of the athlete. The articles are well-written and supplemented appropriately with illustrations and photographs. This section has extensive appendices covering topics from readiness questionnaires to examinations to consent forms and recommendations for preventing injuries to major components of the musculoskeletal system. They will provide the practicing doctor of chiropractic with some ready-made forms to use in a sports chiropractic practice. The second part of this compilation addresses injury care. There are sections on assuring quality of care, diagnosis and management of common injuries to the knee, lower leg, and foot, and sections on spinal stabilization and myofascial pain syndromes. In addition to excellent photographs demonstrating most of the procedures, these sections-like others in the book-have accompanying algorithms. TICC is well known for its extensive use of quality algorithms. These most definitely enhance and facilitate the learning experience. For those not familiar with these wonderful tools, they provide a step-by-step approach to making clinical decisions and deciding which procedure should follow. They take the clinician through some complex processes in a logical, easy-to-follow manner. A recent article in Dynamic Chiropractic (June 26, 2000, NE edition) titled “The Third Paradigm” by Reginald Gold, DC, PhC, discussed three different paradigms of chiropractic thinking within the chiropractic profession. His theories were insightful and suggested some important ramifications for the future of the chiropractic profession. These practitioners rely on scientific research and studies that suggest that chiropractic has therapeutic efficacy. They often quote studies that have shown that chiropractic care reduces time missed from work or that it is less expensive than traditional medical care. This is of particular interest to insurance companies, since they were designed precisely to pay for this type of care. Generally speaking, these types of cases require only temporary and occasional care. While insurance companies have begun to reimburse for some wellness care (e.g., smoking cessation programs or limited memberships at health clubs), actuarial studies indicate that most people will not utilize these services. Insurance companies, after all, are in the business of making money.

Indianapoliss Seton Cove Center Seeks to Integrate Spirituality into the WorkplaceFor the novice, a number of questions soon emerge. How does spirituality in the workplace-especially the health care workplace-relate to that workplaces pastoral care department? What is the distinction between spirituality and religion? How is spirituality in the workplace related to “complementary medicine”? How might it be related to “healing touch”? Is workplace spirituality related to an interest in integrating organizational mission, vision, and values? How is it related to stress reduction, or management, or behavioral medicine? Is there a body of knowledge, a science that provides an intellectual foundation for workplace spirituality? Or, on the other hand, is some of the workplace spirituality we hear about merely a kind of pseudo-spirituality developed for corporate reasons? Is it possible that academic courses, complete with degrees, will eventually prepare people to be workplace spirituality specialists? If so, what will the curriculum look like? Self-Acceptance How can we accept ourselves just the way we really are in the moment, especially when it seems obvious that we need to change? For some of us, depending on our childhood and other programming, self-acceptance may feel like giving up striving for a better life. It may feel like over-indulging or coddling ourselves or even denying what it is we need to change in our lives. My definition of self-acceptance is: My ability to accept myself in the moment, with compassion and without self-criticism, self-evaluation or self-judgment.

The alliance with Ace will help it supply its stores with more products, say Sodimac officials. Terms were not disclosed. An Ace company official says the deal will allow Sodimac to compete with The Home Depot. Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. American First Mortgage Source Inc. will open Feb. 1 at 504 W. Mission Ave., in Escondido. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many. The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002;187(3), Part 2, focuses on how and why womens health and gender-based competencies should be woven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education. It discusses appropriate components of the health and medical curriculum, and combining health care competencies with educational objectives and models for teaching reproductive health.

The What It Takes television spot focuses on how it takes a person with truly special and unique qualities — from patience and dedication to a sense of humor — to handle the day-to-day challenges of running a small business. Recognizing small business owners are stretched for time and lack the resources of large corporations, the MasterCard ad captures real-life small business moments such as working odd hours and dealing with faulty office equipment. MasterCards What It Takes commercial salutes people in business for themselves, while also demonstrating why MasterCard business cards are the most effective way to pay for all the things a small business needs. A corresponding print ad is slated to break later this summer in publications such as Fortune, New York Times Magazine, TIME and The Wall Street Journal. The creative used in the print versions will follow the What It Takes theme leveraged in the new television commercial. Both the television and print ads are designed to build awareness of MasterCards suite of solutions created specifically for small business owners. Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house. Mary Skiffington has joined the fine homes residential division of Cassidy Associates Real Estate, Inc. Gina Drucker and Karen Pado have joined RE/MAX of Rancho Bernardo as a real estate sales team. International Real Estate has added Eric B. Shwisberg as vice president and general counsel. Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. Kitchen. By Yoshimoto Banana. Translated from the Japanese by Megan Backus. New York: Grove Press, 1993. 152 Pages. Kitchen, a short novel, is paired in the same titled book, with a novella of Bananas, Moonlight Shadow. Kitchen chronicles a contemporary young womans journey through the grief and healing process. Banana uses this main character as a vehicle for the reader to view the social change occurring in contemporary Japan. The first person account by the main character, Mikage, describes the loss she feels not only for all the members of her immediate family, but also the larger nuclear family of past generations. The story begins with the death of Mikages grandmother, the last surviving member of her family. Her grandparents raised Mikage, after both of her parents were killed when she was very young, and in her teenage years, her grandfather has also died. As part of her grief process, Mikage is adopted by a very complex and contemporary family, Yuichi, a young man who had befriended Mikages grandmother and Eriko, his transsexual mother. While living with this family, Mikage learns the meaning of joy, finds comfort in belonging to a family, and develops a satisfying career in cuisine. However, her grief and healing process become complicated when Eriko dies and Yuichi succumbs to depression over his mothers death. Because of Erikos and Yuichis generosity and compassion, Mikage is able to reach Yuichi, and in the process, learns a life lesson, finding the necessary balance between suffering and pleasure. Its a difficult confession for me to make, being a style leader and all that, but Im having a serious problem with the Eighties revival. I know its all fabulously post-modern and ironic, and I dare say Im still just bitter about not copping off with Simon Le Bon in my teens, but dancing to “Dont You Want Me” on a Monday night just isnt twiddling my knobs second time around. Which is a shame, because I seem to be going to more and more parties where the Eighties are de rigeur. This week, for example, I went to the super-duper-hipsky launch party for Sheryl Garratts excellent book Adventures in Wonderland: A Decade of Club Culture. Im afraid, under the circumstances, the book would have been better named A Decade in Culture Club. But there you go, too late now. Still, Sheryl Garratt was really lovely, although not quite what you would expect of an ex-The Face editor. Big, bouncy and friendly, her silver shirt battened down like armour from the neck to the sleeves, youd be forgiven for thinking that Garratts never been near a club in her life. From this persons lofty yet obscured perch on the branches of his federal health-care plan, he has no idea what awaits him when he enters the real world of private health-care plans for seniors. As a former agent and purveyor of these programs, I could tell him he is woefully ignorant of the true costs and pitfalls faced now by seniors, let alone when he takes his future place among them. It is my sincere wish that someone, perhaps the author, will remind this fellow, at some point in the distant future, when half to 60 percent of his monthly income is devoted to drugs to keep him alive, that he should have saved more. All a-flutter at the Bluebird Some guests chose an icy perambulation down Chelseas sparkling Kings Road to last Thursdays glamorous party at that beacon of retail chic, The Shop at Bluebird. Others, including a smattering of fashions finest and party-hard It-girl Kimberly Stewart, were chauffeured directly to its door to celebrate the launch of the London College of Fashions debut publication, The Measure, an insight into the industry written by the industry. As a crowd that included Giles Deacon, Jimmy Choo and ex- Topshopper Jane Shepherdson paid as much attention to the food (inch- long ice-cream cones and tupenny-sized apple pies) as could be expected for a fashion get-together, Claudia Schiffer arrived for the briefest of cameos.

In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. A 30-year-old problem may soon be solved, but whether the state Legislature has to get involved has yet to be seen. State Rep. Donald Friske, R-Merrill, testified before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Madison Wednesday regarding his bill, AB 163, which would create an exemption for certain wetlands for the construction of a road located in Tomahawk. “Its difficult for me to conceive any kind of opposition to the second road,” Friske said, pointing out that he grew up near the land being looked at for the second road during his childhood and would often use it as a shortcut to town during his teen-age years. The 2.3- acre stretch is also used as a snowmobile trail. This thesis will be tested on data pertaining to those Aberdeenshire turnpikes constructed before 1810 and will be considered from five standpoints: Aberdeenshire roads before 1796, the administration of the turnpike trusts, the topography of Aberdeenshire, local road construction practice, and the supervision of road construction. It will also be tested against relevant data published in the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia3 and the observations of contemporary writers.First it is necessary to establish the physical and theoretical criteria and the limits to be considered in argumentation. First, the roads to be considered all lay within the boundaries of the old county of Aberdeenshire as it existed before it became a part of the Grampian Region. Whilst concentrating on events in Aberdeenshire, reference will be made to road conditions and construction in the adjacent counties of Kincardineshire and Banffshire which formed the sparsely populated land mass of north-east Scotland. Second, the emphasis of this article, unlike some previous studies of turnpike roads,4 will be aimed primarily toward the engineering aspects of road construction, with the administration of road trusts being considered only where it impinged directly on engineering matters. Third, local road construction practices, established from archival sources, will be compared with those specified by Telford and McAdam, and with those used previously for the construction of roads in other areas of Britain. First, snow is removed from the existing area far enough for two days of work. Then, dozers are used to rip up the frozen ground in small increments. Workers are careful not to rip open too much earth in case snow falls overnight and fills the holes with frost and moisture. The dozers then push fill material into the existing road and push frozen and dry material onto the road. The sheeps foot roller is then used to roll over the material to break up the frozen chunks of dirt and mix the dry and frozen material together. After a base course (the subbase layer of an asphalt roadway) is compacted, the grader is rolled over it to ensure that the road is even. The smooth-wheel roller is used to compact the top 4 to 6 inches of road. The next day, the top 2 inches of the road are final-graded, and 3 inches of well-graded #5 gravel are spread, graded, and compacted once more. While this is being done, other Soldiers grade and compact the ditches along the side and complete the finish work. This process may sound easy, but when the top 12 inches of road are frozen, it is not a simple task. The road that Task Force Eagle is working on is important to the local population for many reasons. First of all, it connects towns (over a 100-kilometer stretch) that were previously isolated from one another. This has significant economic impacts because these towns can now trade and export among each other. The road allows the small village governments to communicate and become a stronger government. The road also impacts education and health care because it is now easier to get to school or see a doctor when needed. But most importantly, Afghan local nationals are helping with the project by providing gravel, fuel, and water used in construction, which creates jobs for the local populace. In turn, the Afghan workers learn how to care and maintain the roads themselves, helping to make them autonomous once coalition forces leave the country.

In laboratories, scientists mix and experiment with chemicals. In kitchens, cooks mix chemicals also, but call them ingredients. A scientist in a laboratory follows an experiment. A cook in a kitchen follows a recipe. Both need to follow directions and measure carefully. They both use special equipment. A scientist may use test tubes and a cook may use bake pans. For both of them, temperature and timing are very important.

No retrospective would be complete without remembering the contributions of leading figures who have helped shape the industry. In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers. Run by The Concrete Centre in collaboration with The Building Centre Trust and delivered by leading designers, innovators and manufacturers, the Concrete Elegance lecture series provides graduate architects and engineers with an inspirational insight into a range of projects where off-site and cast in-place concrete have been used to achieve innovative and elegant design. The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson. Urban Real Estate Uses RingCentral Service to Keep Busy Brokers Connected Urban Real Estate works with individuals and corporate investors that buy real estate in the downtown Chicago area. With 15 brokers and growing, owner Matt Farrell attributes this success in part to a web-centric business model. Because 80 percent of real estate shoppers begin their search online, Urban Real Estate leverages the Internet for business productivity and lead generation. Farrell sought a communication system that would align with his web-based business model without compromising the connectivity that is essential to serving their customers. Farrell replaced his ATT service with an Internet phone system from RingCentral. The switch to RingCentral enabled Urban Real Estate to cut costs while providing business grade features such as multiple extensions with voicemail, professionally recorded greetings, and the ability to forward calls to any phone. Farrell was able to setup and customize the system within minutes on the web. Chicago-based hometouch inc. is hoping to radically change the means by which Utah home buyers find properties by opening multi-media, mall-based showrooms here. Utah is the first stop on a nationwide roll-out of hometouch, which is a subsidiary of Chicago-based One Stop Shop Inc., said Mitch Rouda, president of hometouch inc. Prior to joining hometouch, Rouda was chief operating officer of Trophy Homes Utah division for four years, before which he spent nine years as editor in chief of Builder magazine for nine years. After a year of real-estate downers, some of last years best performing Chicago banks will most likely see a decrease in earnings this year. For State Bank of Countryside, “real estate development is our specialty, that is our niche,” according to Diane Brennwald, senior vice president of compliance and marketing. Bank President Tom Boyle estimates 80 percent to 85 percent of the banks lending is in real estate development. With $978 million in assets, $525 million of loans and leases are in construction and land development. Thats 75 percent of the banks total loans and leases. Boyle is estimating that “earnings will be down 20 percent from 2006.” Earnings for State Bank in 2006 were just over $39 million which still leaves earnings estimates at above $30 million for 2007. State Bank had an ROAA of 2.46 percent last year. According to the FDIC, Broadway Bank has more than 85 percent of the banks assets (about $1 billion) in net loans and leases. Nearly half of Broadways net loans were in construction and land development as of June 2007. Another 32 percent was in commercial real estate. Broadway has been listed as the top earning bank in Chicago based on ROAA for five years. The bank is tightly held by the Giannoulias family which includes Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. Broadways loan portfolio is believed to be more geographically diverse than State Banks with more lending out of state; however the real estate market in some of those other states is still being pummeled by foreclosures.
