reinforced concrete cutting blades

August 28th, 2008

Extended blade life, less resharpening and material specialization are among the latest improvements in saw blades. Longer blade life and the quality of cut are the two most important attributes of circular saw blades, according to Tony Colangelo, president of F.S. Tools. When cutting solid woods, especially exotic woods, greater emphasis is placed on minimizing waste and a thinner blade is required, he said. The advanced carbide grades that are utilized today and the tolerances that are maintained in the saw blades also have improved saw blades, said Scott Erikson, vice president of engineering at Leuco Tool Corp.
The Intimidator masonry blade cuts terra cotta sewer pipes, reinforced concrete, brick, and slate. The reciprocating saw blade is ideal for cutting hard masonry materials in tight areas. One blade can cut up to 100 brick. It is offered in 6.5-, 8.5-, 10.5-, and 12.5-in. lengths to accommodate 6-, 8-, and 10-in. stem walls. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Bimetal portable-bandsaw blade design promises more durable and faster cutting than similar blades to reduce blade changeovers. Destroyer blades feature improved tooth geometries, tempered blades, and coating to increase lubricity. Come welded to length to fit most portable saws and in 250 ft coils. Size: 1/2 in. wide, 0.020 in. thick. Tooth pitch: 10 to 24 TPI.

PORTLAND, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 29, 1998–ChiroNet, a chiropractic health organization network headquartered in Portland, Oregon, was chosen as the top Chiropractic health care delivery organization in an independent survey. This confidential survey of chiropractors involved in managed care from Oregon and southwest Washington was completed on June 15, 1998, by performance Marketing Group of Vancouver, Washington. 89% of all excellent ratings given by providers were given to ChiroNet. Areas rated included: reputation, management, credentialing, level of paperwork, contribution to professional development, claims staff, preference of affiliation and total value to the physician. The physicians in the survey participate in a range of one to four Chiropractic networks, with the average per respondent of 2.4 networks. Physicians participating in the survey represented members of American Chiropractic Network (ACN), AXIS, Alternare, and ChiroNet. Of special significance is the estimate of their total practice coming through affiliation of individual networks: ACN (7%), AXIS (4%), Alternare (2%), and ChiroNet (22%). Here is the breakdown of the top two networks rated by chiropractors in each category:
With an increased number of “seasoned citizens” seeking chiropractic care, our practices are in an enviable position to serve the health care needs of these over-65 members of our society. We have many avenues at our disposal, due to our training, experience, and patient base. Since our professions beginning, we have stressed the holistic approach to good health, which includes, but is not limited to: nutrition, exercise, posture, mental well-being, and preventative health care issues such as cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and osteoporosis measurements, which help safeguard our patients health. Each of the foregoing also presents an excellent opportunity to increase our visibility in our community. Involvement in public health projects and programs also affords our profession some good public relations, because we would be stressing health care methods that are not necessarily chiropractic procedures. Thereby, we could conceivably increase our patient base as well (which by all accounts is too small now). Most of these health care checkup services can be performed at venues such as health fairs, patient appreciation days, and during a routine in-office patient visit. If a condition such as increased blood pressure, decreased bone density, or high cholesterol level is discovered during such multiphasic public health screenings, a referral to the appropriate practitioner can be made, which helps secure our position in the public health care arena as a “member of the team.”Another beneficial side-effect can be that of referrals to us from the practitioners to whom we send our patients for co-managed care.
As a group, the 50,000 chiropractic professionals make up the third largest health care provider in the United States, after the medical and dental professions. They are also the largest alternative medicine provider of natural health care. There is very promising research evidence supporting the cost-effectiveness, low risk, and high patient satisfaction of chiropractic health services with respect to spinal pain and related conditions. Despite the demand, advantages, and efficacy of chiropractic health services, the chiropractic profession is not being integrated into the health care system. Doctors of chiropractic are largely ignored, and their progress is impeded by strong economic groups. Thus, the American public is not receiving the full benefit of natural alternatives for health care. The chiropractic profession has struggled with its definition and adaptation to the modern needs and demands of the health care market and the American public. It is urgent that the chiropractic profession reengineer itself. A strategic plan is needed to integrate chiropractic services into the health care market to improve the quantity and quality of natural health services rendered to the American public. Although many of the chiropractic professions leaders have eloquently written and discussed many critical issues, these discussions have not resulted in a strategic plan for the chiropractic profession. Since the profession has been without guidance or direction, it has reacted to health care market forces, instead of anticipating and acting on the health care market.

Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. NUTRIENTS AND NUTRITION
Q. Whats the best way to cook vegetables so I wont lose all the nutrients? Should 1 boil, steam or microwave? A. Whatever you do, youre going to lose some nutrients during cooking. Water, light, air and heat are all destructive to vitamins, so try to limit the amount of time your vegetables are exposed to any of them. Water leaches out water-soluble nutrients, including vitamin C, the B vitamins and certain minerals. Heat destroys vitamin C. thiamin and folic acid.
Nutrient density is a measure of the nutrients a food provides compared to the calories it provides. Foods low in calories and high in nutrients are nutrient dense, while foods high in calories and low in nutrients are nutrient poor. Nutrient-dense foods should be eaten often, whereas nutrient-poor foods should only be eaten occasionally. A healthful diet includes mostly nutrient-dense foods. People who restrict their calories should obtain as much nutrition as they can from the calories they consume by choosing nutrient-dense foods. Those who consistently choose nutrient-poor foods will not get the nutrients they need.

C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.
Cancer PO Box 189, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada, V0R 1X0
CancerCancer is, in general, more common in industrialized nations, but there has been a growth in cancer rates in developing countries, particularly as these nations adopt the diet and lifestyle habits of industrialized countries. Over one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Anyone can get cancer at any age; however, about 80 percent of all cancers occur in people over the age of fifty-five.

Morgan D. (1996). The principles of hypnotherapy. Bradford UK: Eilidon Press. The book is divided into three parts. Part A consisting of 9 chapters covers foundational material on systems theory and how that can be applied to organic systems and to hypnosis. It discusses positive feedback loops that amplify the process and negative feedback loops that subdue the process. Positive feedback amplification can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether increasing the effect is desired, while negative feedback calming can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether decreasing the effect is desired. Morgan focuses on the activity of a system, the activity of its component subsystems, or the activity of the supersystem of which the system is a component. His main theoretical focus is on whether the activity of the system is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same, as other components change in specified ways. Hypnosis is described in systems terms, not as a “state,” but rather in terms of what system or subsystem components are changed, either increased or decreased, during trance induction, deepening, maintenance, trance work, and termination. He uses simple symbols to represent activities in quasi-mathematical style, which is helpful. Some of the letter symbols are used for different activities in different parts of the book. It would have been easier to follow if given letter symbols had been used more consistently to represent single specific activities. Some of his textual references to others publications are found in the bibliography at the end of the book, but some are unfortunately not present in the bibliography. He goes through common hypnotic tests in Chapter 8 and inductions in Chapter 9 explaining them in systems terms. This does produce some greater conceptual clarity with respect to subsystem component activities during hypnosis. Part B consisting of 6 chapters is the central discussion on what the systems approach can teach us about hypnotherapy. Chapter 10 discusses the matter of diagnosis in systems terms looking at precursors, problems, and resultants, and how they change with respect to one another. Chapter 11 focuses on positive and negative feedback loops in organic systems including behavioral, emotive, and cognitive. The vicious circle is a positive feedback loop with harmful consequences. Thinking in systems terms may make needed changes clearer to the therapist. Chapter 12 looks at the consequences of symptom reduction. The remaining three chapters in this part examine making changes by choosing the appropriate positive feedback loops to amplify desired effects and the appropriate negative feedback loops to quiet undesired effects, planning the changes, and reinforcing the changes by selecting natural reinforces.
The authors note that there have been 13 studies which used prospective randomized control designs which compared hypnosis either to baseline level noiception or to a control condition of some sort. These studies consistently demonstrate that hypnosis can assist patients with chronic pain with a reduction in their pain experience and pain related coping for a variety of chronic pain conditions. Hypnosis was generally found to be more effective than other nonpharmacological interventions such as physical therapy, attention, and psychoeducative strategies. The intervention which was most commonly employed was training in self-hypnosis. The authors provide a critique of these studies in that there appears to be a lack of standardization in the uses of hypnotic interventions in these clinical trials and also that the treatment group numbers tended to be lower than one might desire. The authors also provide a number of very useful suggestions for future research and clinical application of hypnosis to assisting patients with chronic pain syndromes. Address for reprints: Gary Elkins, Ph.D., Baylor University, Waco, TX. Email address: Gary_Elkins@baylor.edu.
In therapeutic interviews described as either hypnosis or biofeedback, the patient must change mental imagery to achieve the desired state or physiologic change. If the therapists monitors physiologic measures while coaching a patient through a self-hypnotic exercise, invariably there will be changes in measures (e.g., increased peripheral temperature, decreased pulse rate). Regardless of the confusion, the benefit of adding physiologic monitoring (biofeedback) to hypnosis is the enhancement of a sense of personal control and competency. Children recognize that by changing their thinking, they can impact body processes. This makes the experience more concrete and provides trance ratification and gives a child increased confidence about achieving the desired therapeutic outcome. NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 15, 1996–Get ready for Hi-Fi meets the Home Computer — your computer audio is about to take a giant leap forward.Worldwide audio leader Harman and computer giant Compaq today unveiled new JBL Pro series speakers co-developed exclusively for Compaqs Presario line, thus breaking the computer sound barrier. At an event held at New Yorks Millennium Hotel, representatives from JBL and Compaq demonstrated the power and clarity of the new speaker systems. They noted that collaboration between Harman engineers and Compaq designers throughout the system design process produced the most advanced multimedia PC sound system to date. From the bottom up, key components of the Presarios were conceived with the goal of producing the best total Compaq/JBL sound system possible.
About 200 professional speaker makers form the backbone of the industry, and Guangdong province is the dominant manufacturing hub. Production is supported by an ample supply of engineering and technical talent; abundant components, particularly raw speakers; and the availability of service industries such as SMT, molding, tooling and plastic injection. Expansion has been a major focus in the last few years, with key industry players building new factories or large industrial parks and purchasing new equipment. Capital investment in this area ranges from US$600,000 for a new factory to up to US$12.5 million for a new industrial park. Makers are also strengthening their market presence abroad by participating in international trade shows and establishing sales or market information collection branches in other countries.
LAS VEGAS — Advanced New Technology Gives You Home Theater Sound Using Your Existing Audio System; No Need to Purchase Additional Speakers, Amplifiers, or Messy Cables While surround sound systems can sound fabulous, to achieve a satisfactory experience costs a lot of money and requires a precise installation by professionals. If a speaker is placed wrongly or is not appropriate for the task, the results can be very disappointing. Many audio companies want you to believe the only way to create realistic home theater sound is to fill your room with expensive speakers, said Barrie Davis, CEO and Founder of Xitel. There is a lot more work in getting a multi-speaker system right than most people really appreciate; its clearly not as simple as pulling a few components out of a box and plugging them in. Were thrilled to introduce SOUNDaround to the market, which allows consumers to achieve an outstanding high-quality home theater experience from their DVD movies and games, using their existing equipment. With SOUNDaround theres no reason to thrown away your perfectly good stereo - for less than $100 you can turn it into an awesome home theater without having to spend lots of money on messy cables, multiple speakers, or expensive surround sound amplifiers.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

More than Meets the Eye Risk managers dont have to satisfy a formal education requirement to get their jobs, but they still ought to be conversant with the content of insurance contracts. That familiarity, however, has a downside because it can be the source of a false sense of security. When they talk about appraisal under the terms of a property policy, textbooks, instructional materials and, instructors have, always had a tendency to presume that the parties have resolved all coverage issues before they resort to appraisal. Thats probably the effect of common sense lurking in the subconscious and exerting a powerful influence over what gets written or spoken. An appraisal is an expensive proposition and each party has to bear a share of the cost. Because the appraiser cant consider coverage issues, the thing to do is resolve them before incurring the expense of an appraisal. Thats just common sense.
A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.

Foreclosure Help

August 17th, 2008

Business Editors/Real Estate Writers SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 19, 2002 A wave of foreclosures triggered by predatory sub-prime lenders continues to plague Chicago despite recent state and city ordinances that sharply restrict loan-to-own lending practices that have resulted in unsophisticated and elderly homeowners losing their homes by default.
Freddie Mac released a study in January of 2008, which showed that lenders are unable to contact borrowers in more than half of the foreclosures they conduct, said John Jelavich, PMIs Vice President of Homeownership Preservation Initiatives. We believe many foreclosures can be avoided through some basic education about options and alternatives to foreclosure. Jelavich continued, The internet is the most powerful education tool available, and video content is the fastest growing and most popular media type on the web. We know that homeowners at risk are turning to the internet for help, and we wanted to provide accurate sources of information that directs people to the resources and help they need.
Business Editors SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 22, 2004 The northern California based foreclosure property investment advisory firm, Foreclosures.com reported today that the sellers market in both northern and southern California is helping troubled homeowners avoid losing their homes in foreclosure.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
* On Beauty by Zadie Smith The Penguin Press, September 2005 $25.95, ISBN 1-594-20063-7 The members of both the Belsey and Kipps families are stalwart theorists. Their individual and collected perceptions of things beautiful, both aesthetically and physically, academically and morally–to some extent–are held close and expressed with convincing conviction. Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.
This academic satire is about two professors and their families. Howard Belsey is a white secular liberal, a specialist in Rembrandt, who is engaged in ideological warfare with a visiting professor, Monty Kippes, a conservative Christian scholar from Trinidad. Each character in the story is undermined by his or her self-deceptions. Howards attachment to theoretical knowledge seems to preclude understanding or controlling his adulterous behavior. Smith brilliantly draws these and other characters and gently but wittily pierces their illusions and pretensions. Howards African-American wife, Kiki, is one of the few characters to offer emotional or moral ballast, along with her son Jerome, who rejects his parents secularism for a newfound Christianity.

FINANCEDividend policy is the decision regarding funds to be distributed or returned to the equity investors. This can be done with common stock dividends, preferred stock dividends, or stock repurchase by the business of its own stock. The aim of this decision is to retain the resources in the business that are required to run the business or make additional investments in the business, as long as the returns earned exceed the required return. In theory, management should return or distribute all resources that cannot be invested in the business at levels in excess of the required return. In practice, however, dividends are often maintained at or changed to certain levels in order to convey the proper signals to the investors and the financial markets. For example, dividends can be maintained at moderate levels to demonstrate stability, maintained at or reduced to low levels to demonstrate the growth opportunities for the business, or increased to higher levels to demonstrate the restoration of a strong financial (capital) structure (debt and equity capital) for the business.Capital is the total of financial resources invested in the business. In terms of the sources, there are two types of capital: interest-bearing debt funds, such as loans, bonds, short-term notes, and interest-bearing payables to trade suppliers; and equity, such as common and preferred stock and the earnings retained in the business that add to stockholders share of the entities. In terms of uses, there are also two types of capital: net working capital, such as operating cash, inventory, and receivables, less interest-free payables to trade suppliers; and fixed capital, such as property, plant, and equipment. Capital is managed to maximize wealth by maximizing the rates of return on investments of capital and thus maximizing the total net present value of the business. This can be done by minimizing the amount of capital used for given business investments with given business returns.

David Blaine Magic Tricks

August 11th, 2008

When youre the smallest kid in the class it helps to have a few tricks up your sleeve. But now the skills that Steven Frayne, 23, used as a schoolboy in Bradford to keep the other kids off his back and himself out of trouble are paving his way to stardom. He was brought up by his mother and rarely saw his father. He was also diagnosed with Crohns disease, a chronic stomach condition, as a child. But now, global fame beckons for Dy-namo, who has signed a major deal with Warner Vision International for the worldwide distribution rights to his next DVD, scheduled for release this November. He is also the star of the video “Hands”, the new single from the Raconteurs, out today. It seems that Dynamo, often referred to as Britains answer to David Blaine, will soon be rivalling the Americans success. Senior vice-president of Warner Vision International, Frank Brunger, said that they would also produce a TV version of the production and distribute it digitally. “We were attracted to work with Dynamo simply because of his talent and the effect it has on other people. He came and did some magic here in our offices and all the staff were gobsmacked,” he said.

LAWYERS who had wanted General Pinochet extradited were still trying early last week to decide what “legal steps” they could take to stop him going to Chile. For some reason I found myself thinking of the sad advertisements one used to see occasionally in the personal columns: “Public school man seeks interesting job, anything legal considered.” But of course I was confusing two different functions of the word legal. Ethical began by meaning “to do with ethics”, and only later came to mean being good. The purist in me still winces when someone says “aesthetic” when they mean “in good taste”. (Aesthetic originally meant “to do with the science of perception”, then “to do with taste”, good, bad or indifferent.) But there was never any need for legal to carry two meanings, because theres a perfectly good alternative that takes half the burden off it: lawful, a nice old word from the late Middle Ages (its parent word, law, appears to be of ancient Scandinavian origin). Everyone understands the difference between “legal business” and the “lawful business” that most of us spend our lives going about. Why couldnt those job-seekers have put “anything lawful considered”? Lawyers use lawful, too; they speak of a “lawful killing”. They dont say “a legal killing” (which, if it meant anything, would presumably refer to their fees).
The Alabama State Nurses Association has expanded its legal representation program to provide legal services for any ASNA member brought before the Alabama Board of Nursing on a matter affecting the nurses license.Previously, ASNA has provided members one hours free legal consultation but under the new program a nurse who receives a letter of investigation from the Board of Nursing will be provided a lawyer through the administrative hearing.ASNA attorney Don Eddins of Auburn said the Board routinely investigates complaints and even the most competent registered nurse is not immune from Board scrutiny.

In an era where managed care is rapidly influencing the full integration of health services, telephonic nursing has become a pivotal core service strategy offered by care delivery networks. Today call centers augment the traditional marketing function into more complex clinical management functions. Indeed, in managed care markets with demand management systems in place, the call center is frequently the crucial linchpin in making such a system operational. In a demand management system, the goal is to engage patients in decision-making which addresses desired outcomes for their medical condition/clinical problems. The premise is that patients, in partnership with their care providers and payer source, can achieve a best fit offering of accessible, efficacious, and cost-minimized services to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. Telephonic nursing assessment, triage, and evaluation plays into achieving the goals of a demand management system. Call centers, so named because of the telephonic linkage created among patients and service providers, are growing in their technological capabilities. Not only are sophisticated banks of telephone cuing systems activated within centers, but state-of-the-art computer hardware and software configurations can be used to manage high volumes of patient-specific data, store and retrieve a wide range of complex clinical algorithms, and trend clinical and program evaluation outcomes.

THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

Relationships with family and friends matter a great deal to children and are also important to long-term emotional and psychological development. The United Kingdom compares poorly in that area with other countries. Most distressingly, we have the lowest proportion reporting that their peers are kind and helpful - less than half say that is the case compared with more than 80 per cent in Switzerland.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Eastenders star Daniella Westbrook gets her mum, Sue, to handle her finances. Daniella, 22, walked straight out of the Sylvia Young Theatre School into her part of Sam Butcher when she was just 16. “The first thing mum did was to take me off to an accountant to get my financial affairs sorted out,” she says. “The one thing they dont teach you at stage school is about doing your income tax and VAT.
Money and Finance in the Age of Merchant Capitalism, by John Day. Malden, Massachusetts, Blackwell, 1999. viii, 165 pp. $29.95 U.S. (paper). The first essay, an outline of general trends in European monetary history from the middle ages to the industrial revolution, including inflation and the development of bank money, is pithy and engaging. Two other essays are specific studies of monetary problems in the economies of Venice and Sardinia, and there is a lengthy survey of the various problems different early modern states had in maintaining the mint standards of their respective metallic currencies. A general theme which surfaces in all of these essays is, as Day puts it, “the chronic instability of the metallic money supply” (p. 108) which became even more exacerbated in times of bullion shortage. Day provides plenty of evidence of the pressures this put on governments to engage in devaluation in attempts to counter the shortage of specie in the economy. In addition, he also shows that the huge, but very under-researched, social problem created by currency shortages, in the form of an extreme scarcity of reliable small change which could be used by the poor, was a general European phenomenon. Although the first essay provides an introduction to Days interests, it was not written specifically to introduce this set of essays and thus his position on monetary history is not explicitly stated. These essays show, however, that he clearly subscribes to the quantity theory of monetary history, although he does not address any of the criticisms which have been levelled against it. For Day, economic expansion was directly linked to the amount of bullion available to the European economy. Thus he sees the depression of the fifteenth century linked to a bullion famine in these years, while the subsequent economic expansion of the sixteenth century was caused by new mining and the influx of American gold and silver. He then sees a subsequent economic slowdown in the seventeenth century followed by a renewed growth in the bullion supply in the eighteenth century - permitting the industrial revolution. There was certainly an important relationship between money in circulation and economic expansion, but it is not such a simple tongue duree functionalism as suggested by Day. There was a third factor in the equation which was credit, and this did not inevitably expand proportionally in relation to the bullion supply, even though it was stimulated by an expanded circulation of the latter. Thus for instance J .R. Wordie has argued that, while much new silver may have come into England in the sixteenth century, it did not stay there because of the costs of foreign war and recurring trade deficits. But, despite this fact, credit increased dramatically. Along similar lines, customs revenues show that Englands import trade was expanding rapidly in the late seventeenth century, as her money supply shrank, partly to pay for such imports. This famously led to the great recoinage and the creation of the Bank of England, but it would be hard to characterize the 1670s and 1680s as a period of economic depression because of a shortage of bullion. The shortage did cause problems in the 1690s, but this didnt translate into an economic depression for the whole of the seventeenth century. Thus, any examination of the relationship between money and economic performance needs to take credit into account as a linked and equally important component in financial systems and should be looked at micro-economically in the short term because of the institutional nature of credit.
Money, Finance, and Capitalist Development, edited by Philip Arestis and Malcolm Sawyer. Northampton, Mass.: Edward Elgar Publishing, 2001. Cloth, ISBN: 1840645989, $95.00. 269 pages. John and Wendy Cornwall begin the essays by outlining what they call an “evolutionary-Keynesian” analysis of capitalist performance (p. 11). They correctly note that economic change cannot be adequately analyzed within the neoclassical framework, which assumes a self-regulating system always tending toward a full-employment equilibrium. Their alternative stresses aggregate demand and its institutional determinants. It also stresses endogenous structural change and the impact of history upon capitalist development. Although the Cornwalls approach is promising, their brief description of how this applies to advanced capitalist nations is somewhat disappointing. Their explanation for the demise of the postwar “golden age” of high employment stresses both a wage-determination system driven by unions exercise of market power and the rise of labor militancy in the late 1960s and early 1970s; it is neither new1 nor convincing. A more comprehensive application of the evolutionary-Keynesian approach seems warranted, one bringing attention to other factors including corporate businesses practices, the rise of global competition, and the spread of financial fragility.

McLEAN, Va. (Bloomberg) — U.S. 30-year fixed home mortgage rates fell this week as the economy continued to grow at a steady pace with low inflation. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage decreased to 7.53 percent in the week ending Sept. 5, from 7.58 percent the previous week, Freddie Mac said Thursday. “Mortgage rates were down slightly with no compelling economic news to move the bond market,” said Robert Van Order, chief economist at Freddie Mac.
Theres never been a better time to buy a home, with mortgage rates at their lowest for 30 years. Kenneth Clarkes 0.25 per cent cut in interest rates last week prompted an immediate response from the countrys biggest lender. The Halifax dropped its standard mortgage rate to 6.99 per cent. And the second-largest lender, the Abbey National, cut its rates to 7.04 per cent for loans below pounds 60,000, 6.99 per cent above. The lowest rates are still offered by the direct lenders, with Direct Line charging 6.25 per cent and Bradford Bingley Mortgages Direct charging 5.99 per cent.
DEDUCTIBILITY Of Home Mortgage Points Points are paid by a borrower to a lender as a prepaid interest charge for the loan in the year the loan is made. This article discusses the general deductibility of points for home mortgage loans, with special attention on refinancing loans.

drug rehab

August 11th, 2008

“These results are not surprising,” said Eric Mitchell, Founder of Drug
Rehab Referral, a company dedicated to helping people find the right
alcohol or drug treatment for their situation. “Thats why we provide
interventions. The majority of calls we receive are from distraught family
members. Sometimes theyve suffered through years of watching someone they
care about ruin their lives and their livelihood. Theyve tried to convince
them that they have a problem and need help, but are continually met with
resistance. They just dont know where to turn. Finally, they call us,” he
said.

Most alcoholics and drug abusers promise they will change but its
painfully rare. Pleas and reasoning from friends and family is not enough.
Only a well-trained and experienced intervention specialist understands
alcohol and drug abuse and what the addicted person is going through. A
specialist knows how to approach someone who is addicted, and how to reach
and get through to them so they can finally agree to get help.

“Despite the promises and the best of intentions,” Mr. Mitchell said, “most
addicts are just not able to do it on their own. They dont intentionally
break their promises, they just cant help themselves. The situation is far
beyond their control.”

A typical punishment used to be “six of the best” from the house captain in front of the whole school, and for really serious crimes, instant expulsion. But now Eton College, the most famous public school in the world, has decided to alter its approach to one of the worst of schoolboy crimes - drug-taking. From next month, the school that since its foundation in 1440 has educated generations of royalty and produced 19 prime ministers, will launch a Priory-style drug rehab programme for its well-heeled teenage pupils. “In the past year, we have lost a couple of boys to drugs. I have no doubt that drugs are a significant temptation to our pupils,” said Mr Little. “We are revising our policy so that pupils of concern can attend counselling and rehabilitation programmes.”
DEFENCE chiefs have set up a special rehab clinic to treat soldiers for drugs addiction. Around 170 troops have so far attended the clinic after testing positive for cannabis or amphetamines. The “second-chance” move comes amid increasing concern over the 600 or so soldiers - the equivalent of a whole battalion - being lost from the forces each year over drugs. In the past they have been automatically kicked out.

The color of an automobile influences how much it costs to insure it. Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations because, after all, it is comprehensive. Car insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Have you ever thought one or more of these statements to be true? You are not alone. A survey conducted by DriveSM Insurance, Mayfield Village, Ohio, from The Progressive Group of Auto Insurance Companies, finds many drivers accept common car insurance myths as true. Here is a sampling: Myth: Car insurance rates are not regulated and insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Fact: Each state has regulators who review the information companies collect as well as the rates they charge; insurers cannot deviate from those rates. Myth: Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations. Fact: Comprehensive coverage is one type of protection available. It only pays for damage caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft, or vandalism; it also covers weather-related (e.g., hail, flood) damage; and damage caused if a vehicle collides with an animal. Moreover, it provides a rental car if a vehicle is stolen.

“About 85% of our clientele is Hispanic and we speak other languages. Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant.

Prepared by a Working Party of The Concrete Societys Materials Group
ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed.

commercial holiday decorations

Then there is the problem of what you do with the decorations when youve taken them down. Pop them in a dusty cardboard box on the wardrobe? Not if you want to avoid “dreadfully bad luck”. Until relatively recently, it was de rigueur in rural parts of southern England to burn the lot, preferably using them (were talking holly, ivy, etc, not plastic Santas) to cook the Shrove Tuesday pancakes. On the other hand, northerners thought it “sinful” to torch the tree. In Worcestershire, they swung both ways: “If Christmas holly burns with a crackling noise, it is a sign of good luck. If it does not crackle, it is a sign of death in the family within the year.” All clear now? I gleaned these invaluable tips from The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland by Steve Roud (Penguin, pounds 25). This encyclopaedic haul indicates both the inventiveness and ubiquity of superstitions. To cite just a few examples, it is considered unlucky to keep your handkerchief folded in your pocket, poke anothers fire, drop scissors, allow a cut onion in the house, point at a rainbow, give someone parsley, borrow salt, wear black at New Year (too late for you fashionistas), enter and leave by different doors, pick up a dropped comb, have anything to do with peacock feathers, find a left-hand glove, laugh too heartily, look in a mirror before the age of one, have a mole on the neck (”trouble by the peck”), wear an opal engagement ring, sneeze to the left, wash your hands in the same water as someone else or see an ambulance (though the ill-luck from this spectacle can be mitigated by seeing a four-legged animal). The insistence on never looking at a new moon through glass seems particularly unfair to we spec-wearers. Mr Roud, who works in that mystic nexus known as the Croydon Public Library, reveals that many superstitions have a long lineage. Pliny enquired in AD77: “Why on the first day of the year do we wish one another a happy and prosperous new year?” But many others are surprisingly recent. The best-known superstition of all, about not walking under ladders, dates from the 1880s, when, presumably, many people were having their houses painted. (Punch pointed out in 1881 that it was even worse luck to step into the road and be run over by a traction engine.) The belief that it is bad luck to have 13 sit down for dinner was first mentioned in print in 1695, some 1,660 years after 13 sat down at the Last Supper.
Perhaps Fox News should encourage people not to spend their money buying gifts but be more in the spirit by creating gifts from the heart and making their own. Celebrating Christmas with friends and family is all that is necessary to preserve a valued tradition. At least there will never be an “OReilly Factor” ornament hanging from my tree this Christmas. Salt Lake City
MANILA, Oct. 8 Kyodo In the largely Roman Catholic Philippines, the Christian holiday Christmas, it sometimes seems, lasts almost forever. Already malls and shopping centers in Manila have started the annual tradition of decorating their stores with Christmas adornments to spark interest in the Yuletide paraphernalia such as trees, wreaths and poinsettias they sell. And fully decorated Christmas trees from several centimeters to several meters tall are already landmarks within and outside many commercial establishments.

used cars in Atlanta

MORATORIUM ON NEW CAR PURCHASES Would you buy a used car from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius?
Used cars have been the butt of jokes ever since the days of Henry Ford. So its no wonder some 1.3 million Americans paid as much as $3,000 extra last year for the added reassurance of buying a “certified” used car. Automakers have begun applying some of the same marketing muscle to certified used cars that they do to new cars. Earlier this month, Toyota Motor Corp.s Lexus luxury division launched 1.9 percent financing for up to 48 months on certified RX SUVs as well as ES and LS sedans. General Motors Corp. just started offering 3.9 percent for up to 60 months on seven popular certified models including Chevrolets Silverado pickup truck and Buicks Century sedan. But it turns out “certified” is no guarantee of a problem-free car. Lexus and the other manufacturers certifying vehicles dont actually inspect the vehicles or make any repairs. Dealers do. And some dealers are better than others. In addition, dealers generally have to pay for new parts out of their own pockets. Finally, unlike new cars, no two used cars are the same. Bottom line: Quality is bound to vary from vehicle to vehicle.
`NOW is the best time to buy a used car, says Federation of Motorcar and Credit Companies of Malaysia President Datuk Tony Khor. He believes current used-car prices are at their most competitive. Of late, a few used-car buyers have been slashing prices. Apparently, used-car sales have tapered off recently. Has the National Automotive Policy (NAP) framework made used cars suddenly more affordable and competitive? Or can the recently announced tariff make an impact on used- car prices? `There is no direct correlation, Khor says of the used-car industry and the NAP. If new car prices are not or only marginally affected, then the demand for used cars in Malaysia would not be significantly different.

NEW YORK — There is a direct connection between oral health and overall health. Also, benchmarks of the female life cycle can be identified through benchmarks in the mouth.
